Monarch Of The Glenne

Just moments ago, 35-year old Norwegian pro', Bjorn Erik Glenne (where's a Norwegian keyboard when you need one?), beat Phil Ivey to become 2007's Barcelona EPT Open Champion, winning $691,000.

His path to the throne wasn't to be an easy one - standing in his way was none other than the Tiger Woods of poker, Phil Ivey, commonly regarded as the world's greatest poker player.

However, the mountain to be climbed actually faced Ivey, for after Glenne had forced Londoner Dave Gregory to the rail with a K-T vs A-5 victory, he had a seemingly insurmountable 11-1 chip lead.

Following several uncontested all-ins, the final encounter arrived when Glenne limped on the small blind with Pocket Tens, only to be met by an all-in push from Ivey with A-5 suited. Of course, Glenne made the call and punched the air in delight as the flop brought a third Ten. By the Turn it was all over and the Norwegian was the new champion, beating one of the greats in the process.

A worthy winner, Glenne was humble in victory, calm and collected and singing the praises of his fearsome opponent. Clearly somehwat shell-shocked, Glenne looked exhausted as his Norwegian countrymen went bananas behind him.

Also worthy are note are the stirling efforts of Dave Gregory whose 3rd place finish netted him a  fantastic  €184,300, and  Robin Keston who took home €69,100 for 8th. Both players did their homeland proud.

But the day belonged to the Norwegian, who had a commanding hold on a menacing table. Of course, the likes of Ivey and Ulriksen were an intimidating prospect, but Glenn more than held his own. Never timid or fearful, he took many a pot off Ivey, and at times, even made the multiple bracelet winner appear beatable. A tough feat indeed.

So, another EPT down and another one just around the corner. The Scandinavians continue to dominate, so let's see if they can win the next one in London. Judging by recent performances, I wouldn't bet against it...
