Sexton's Millions

He may be rumoured to possess a money bank bigger than Scrooge McDuck's, but, either way, Mike Sexton has just added another million to his ever-increasing fortune.

Indeed, after 16 hours of final table play, the former WSOP bracelet winner and all-round poker veteran picked up a cool 1 million bucks for winning the 2006 Tournament of Champions.

Made up of WSOP Circuit winners, the final table of last year's event, and six Harrah's selected players, this potentially lucrative freeroll was an invite only tournament which boasted an impressive 2 million prize pool. Not bad for just 27 players, huh?

And those 27 participants were no slouches either. Former WSOP Main Event winner Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson and 'The Great Dane' and multiple WPT victor Gus Hansen (the eventual bubble) were both present, not to mention Daniel Negreanu and Mike 'The Mouth' Matusow who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Also deserving of a mention is Day 1 and Final Table chip leader Andy 'The Monk' Black, who, at the start of Day 2, held a seemingly invincible 942,000, more than double his nearest rival Negreanu who was playing with a rather overshadowed 443,000.

However, even with the stack of all stacks, the renowned Irishman could only manage a rather disappointing 5th place finish, finally exiting after having his all-in move with K-9 suited caught by the somewhat dominating delight of Matusow's pocket cowboys. Still, that 100 grand he received for his efforts ought to soften the blow.

But, when the smoke had cleared, it was Negreanu and Sexton who were battling it out for top honours and the eye-widening 1 million dollar cheque.

With many Rio onlookers bypassing the Employee Event to grab a peek at the more mouth watering line-up, they were treated to an all-star cast and a great battle of old versus young.

But, when Sexton found pocket Aces against the Q-J of Negreanu on a T-8-4 flop, all the chips moved in and the emphatic Ace on the turn followed by the rag on the river clairfied the old guard as the triumphant victor.

Guess the old fellas still have trick or two left up their sleeve. Do they have any more? Only time and the upcoming World Series will tell.
