This weekend at the Irish Poker Tour Grand Final, Ireland’s Brendan Walls and England’s Mohammed Shaifiq split a cool €270,000 right down the middle.
Although a deal was offered earlier on in the final with 3 remaining, it was rejected by the highly acclaimed Ram ‘Crazy Horse’ Vaswani. And, as tends to often be the case, it was the Hendon Mob member who finished third taking €56,000.
Whilst the final two could be described as relative unknowns, the final was far from void of familiar faces. Poker veteran Mel Judah (4th) and blondeite Julian ‘Yoyo’ Thew (8th) both faired well, but, alas, were unable to rake in that much desired six figure sum.
Day 1 was a fun affair with many a famous name showing up. Playing on their home ground, Ireland were in full force with Roy Brindley, Padraig Parkinson (left), Mick McCloskey, Irish Denis, Rory Liffey, and WSOP 4th place finisher Andy Black all hitting the felt.
Meanwhile, their English neighbours had also made the effort to bring along a few stars; Dave ‘El Blondie’ Colclough, Barney Boatman, Steve Vladar, Mike Magee, and ‘Mad’ Marty Wilson, all showed their mugs, not to mention blondeites Stuart Fox, ‘Bad Girl’ Pham, Matt Tyler, JP Kelly, and Paul Jackson.
And with Jimmy White, Matthew Stevens, and Stephen Hendry flying the flag for the sporting celebrities, this really was a star-studded affair with plenty for the spectators to chew on.
However, when the smoke cleared, it was the unfamiliar faces of Walls and Shafiq who took the biggest chunk of the pie, with the former finally adding the trophy to his tasty cheque when his pocket cowboys held up against Shafiq’s A-T on a ten high flop.
So, well done to Irishman Brendan Wells for what is by far his biggest win to date. But also, yet another congratulations must go out to Julian Thew (right) for his 8th place finish. That’s another €12,000 in the bank. Snoopy tips his hat.
