This weekend in Barcelona, Spanish young gun and relative unknown Isaac Mayolas became the World Heads Up Champion, fending off online superstar Paul ‘Actionjack’ Jackson in the final match-up.
Whilst Mayolas (affectionately named Mayonnaise by a certain friend of mine) overcame his semi-final opponent in less than 3 minutes and just 3 hands, Paul had a rather trickier time of it, having to conquer German sensation George Danzer.
When it came to the final, the key hand came when Paul was dealt pocket Queens. At first, the 9 high flop appeared to be just the ticket for the Brit, especially with his opponent holding A-9, but, after having two bets called, the river finally dealt Mayolas a third nine, and Paul was faced with a final bet that he just couldn’t resist calling.
Paul’s swan song came when he moved all-in with 8-4 on a T-8-7 flop. Unfortunately, he was outpaired by the Spaniard’s J-T, and the Jack turn and Ace river did nothing but seal the deal for Mayolas. The Spaniard was champ, and a rather fatigued Paul Jackson was forced to settle for the runner-up spot.
Following his runner-up finish, Actionjack commented, “It was a great week for me and, although a bit deflated at the moment, I am very happy with the week.”
Paul then went on to say, “The young Spaniard that beat me was a deserving winner and played extremely well and I was happy to go down fighting after a long struggle. At least I played quite well in the final unlike the semi where I was outplayed and lucky to get through.”
Paul has gained a lot of respect for his run in this competition and many predict that, next year, he’ll go that one place further. Congratulations to Paul from everyone at blonde.
